ITU-T Test Event reveals poor car hands-free performance of mobile phones
Interoperability tests conducted by HEAD acoustics
A poor performance of in-vehicle hands-free telephony is often caused by the mobile phone and not by the hands-free system itself: This is the result of a test event in May, held at ITU in Geneva in May 2014. Interoperability tests – conducted by HEAD acoustics – analyzed the audio performance of a representative sample of mobile phones in conjunction with vehicle-mounted hands-free terminals.
Roughly 70 % of the tested phones show a performance degradation which results in a deteriorated speech quality for drivers and conversational partners. These shortfalls in the audio quality of hands-free-supported conversation reduce customer satisfaction and lead to complaints by automotive customers.
The measurements of the mobile phones were conducted in the style of chapter 12 of ITU-T Recommendations P.1100 and P.1110. HEAD acoustics acted as the official test laboratory providing the necessary test equipment: the measurement front end MFE XI (Universal Bluetooth® Access Point), the communication analysis system ACQUA with the measurement standards P.1100, P.1110 and HQS-Bluetooth®-Source. The measurement results show that some of the worst-performing phones cause a significant decline in voice quality, while others even fail to acknowledge that they have been connected to a vehicle´s hands-free system.
Such quality degradation has led to customer complaints addressed to the automotive industry, as the representatives of Mercedes-Benz, Toyota and Bosch (supplier of hands-free terminals) reported during the test event. Various statements of automotive manufacturers participating in the test event can be found in the official press release in the newsroom on the ITU-T website, cf.
