HEAD acoustics supports ITU-T Test Event in Geneva
From 12-16 May ITU will organize a test event at their headquarters in Geneva to verify the audio performance of mobile phones working in conjunction with hands-free telephones in vehicles. During this event roughly 50 tests will be conducted and analyzed.
Hands-free communication in cars is becoming increasingly important but in practice, many aspects still exist which decrease speech quality. This includes for example the lack of interoperability of the devices, leading to impaired performance across different vehicle and handset brands. In Recommendations ITU-T P.1100 (“Narrowband hands-free communication in motor vehicles”) and ITU-T P.1110 (“Wideband hands-free communication in motor vehicles”) speech quality tests for vehicle mounted hands-free systems are defined.
At this test event HEAD acoustics will be the official test laboratory providing the necessary test equipment: the measurement front end MFE XI (Universal Bluetooth® Access Point), the communication analysis system ACQUA with the measurement standards P.1100, P.1110 and HQS-Bluetooth®-Source.
This test event has several objectives:
The audio performance of state-of-the-art mobile phones will be tested in Short Range Wireless connection typically used in conjunction with vehicle-mounted hands-free terminals according to chapter 12 of ITU-T P.1100 and P.1110.
The participating companies will obtain important information on the test results, e.g. as Quality Pie Charts giving an easy-to-read summary of the performance of their devices. Two examples of these Quality Pie Charts are shown here (c.f. picture on the right), representing two wideband capable mobile phones. The Pie Chart on the left side indicates a partly bad performance (red pie slices represent requirement violations) whereas the right chart indicates a good performance.
Discussions of the test results between the automotive and the mobile phone industry should improve the voice quality of vehicle-mounted hands-free phones.

The experiences gained at this event and also the anonymized test results will help to improve the two ITU-T recommendations and encourage a new era of trouble-free hands-free communications.
